Ask Engadget HD: HD projector or HDTV?

Though this may not be The Great Debate or anything, it's still a point of contention between quite a few home theater enthusiasts. Here's your shot at chiming in:
"I'm about to move into my new apartment and I've got big plans for the entertainment system. However, I don't know whether to go with a HD projector or a HDTV (LCD, plasma, DLP, it doesn't matter). I only need 720p because quite frankly, I can't tell the difference between 720p and 1080p; plus 720p is cheaper! I realize that both have their pros and cons (size, mobility, inputs, cost, etc.), but I just can't determine which would be better. I'd love some actual recommendations from both sides to consider."
Time to get your arguments in order, folks. Should this guy go beamer or flat-panel? Let us know which (and why) in comments below.
Panasonic Introduces Web-Enabled Plasma TV
Posted by :: mirage | Date :: May 22, 2008 12:29:00 | [ 0 comments ]
When I think of high-definition content, I generally don't think of YouTube, or Google's Picasa, or really much content on the Web. Sure, I've watched my share of videos on YouTube and caught up on shows on network Web sites, but none of it is of the quality I'd consider HDTV-worthy. But that hasn't stopped a few companies from introducing Web-enabled sets, and now we can add Panasonic to the list of manufacturers that see the Web as a future source for HD programming.
Panasonic's new PZ850 series for the Viera line of plasma HDTVs will be available in mid-June in four screen sizes, including 46-inch, 50-inch, 58-inch, and a whopping 65 inches. (EDIT 12:19 PM PDT:The sets use Panasonic's VIERA CAST technology; by connecting an Ethernet cable, the sets can access YouTube videos and photos from Picasa.)
LG 47LG60

Part of LG's new "Scarlet" series of televisions, the 47LG60 LCD HDTV ($3,499.95 list) offers a blend of colorful modern style along with the finest picture quality I've seen from an LCD TV. The set's high-speed LCD technology proved adept at minimizing detail-destroying motion blur while maintaining good color quality at even the widest viewing angles. Videophiles will also appreciate the excellent HD video processor, as well as the best set of picture controls I've seen. Of course the TV isn't the least expensive 47-inch LCD TV around. Still, you'll be hard pressed to find another set that delivers this level of picture quality, which is why it earns our Editors' Choice.
Samsung demos 82” 2160p HDTV
Posted by :: mirage | Date :: May 20, 2008 12:56:00 | [ 0 comments ]
Los Angeles (CA) – Samsung draws attention at this year’s Society for Information Display (SID) International Symposium with a 82” Quad HDTV that offers four times the resolution of today’s 1080p high definition TVs.
The prototype display has a massive 82” size and features a resolution of 3820x2160 pixels, which results in a total screen resolution of 8.3 megapixels. Current 1080p TVs run at 1920x1080 pixels or 2.1 megapixels. According to the manufacturer, the TV integrates a red/green/blue LED backlight, which raises the color saturation to 150%. The image refresh rate is 120 Hz.
Mobile Phones Could Go HD as Early as 2009
Posted by :: mirage | Date :: May 20, 2008 12:54:00 | [ 0 comments ]
Mobile phone component manufacturers are now showing a growing interest in HD video processing, which is on the verge of becoming a standard capability of TVs, HDD recorders and camcorders.
Several overseas semiconductor manufacturers have already announced their application processors for HDTV processing. Broadcom Corp announced it in October 2007, so did NVIDIA Corp and Texas Instruments Inc (TI) in February 2008. All these manufacturers' processors can encode and decode 1280 x 720 resolution HD video at 30fps.
Record up to 12 HDTV programs at once with the Seagate Showcase
Posted by :: mirage | Date :: May 20, 2008 12:52:00 | [ 0 comments ]
Sure, your TiVo HD can record 2 HDTV programs at the same time. But slap the upcoming Seagate Showcase external hard drive on your PVR or home theater PC and you can record up 12 at once. You know, if you've got 12 CableCARD or ATSC TV tuners.
The Seagate Showcase is basically a fancy new hard drive enclosure with a snazzy new Seagate Pipeline HD Series hard drive which can handle up to 12 simultaneous HD streams without cracking a sweat or making loud whirring noises. The Showcase comes in capacities of up to 1TB, which should be enough to store 200 hours of HD video or 1000 hour of standard definition video.
The box is designed to be compatible with Motorola set top boxes sporting eSATA ports. It also has a USB 2.0 port which means it should work with other devices including computers running Windows Vista with Windows Media Center.

Is the Tech Industry Recession-Proof?
Posted by :: mirage | Date :: May 20, 2008 12:41:00 | [ 0 comments ]
You can't pick up a paper or check out the news online today without seeing stories about a looming recession, the housing crisis or even potential food shortages. At the same time, the country is going through a credit crunch and wages are flat.
All of this bad economic news has consumers jumpy. Instead of buying name-brand, many shoppers are buying generic. Instead of shopping at upper-end retailers, they are flocking to Target, Costco and Sam's Club.
Economists are saying the U.S. is in the early stages of a prolonged period of belt-tightening.
